I have had the amazing blessing of winning a 3 day Suja Juice cleanse in their latest Instagram giveaway. I have been a fan of their products for a few months now, and have really wanted to try the whole “infuse your body with this healthy goodness” since my initial discovery of their juices. Now before you all start with your “juice cleanses are dangerous” or “you’re going to be starving yourself” lectures, let me tell you a little bit about these juices.
First of all, I buy them every so often as a treat (you can get them at Whole Foods but they’re pretty pricey.. about $8 per bottle (2 servings)) and occasionally use them as a full on breakfast or snack replacement and my body ends up completely satisfied and full. These juices are cold pressed, which helps avoid damaging the nutrients of the produce which tends to happen with exposure to heat and oxygen. They are also certified organic. A whole lot of fresh produce goes into making each bottle of Suja. I feel the “pulp” in the texture of the juice, so I know it’s not just water and 5% juice.
Here’s the breakdown of my day. Every day of the cleanse (that’s 3 days for me, but you can get a 1 day and 5 day cleanse as well) consists of 6 bottles of the juice.
1. Breakfast- Glow
2. Mid-Morning- Fuel
3. Lunch- Purify
4. Mid-Afternoon- Fiji
5. Dinner- Green Supreme
6. Dessert- Vanilla Cloud
In my experience with the Suja that I have consumed, it takes me quite awhile to work through a bottle of the juice. I even told Erik I wouldn’t be surprised if I just had to open one bottle right after finishing the other one. I’ve used Suja to hold me over during my evening work hours, and it takes me a good two or three voice lessons to get through my bottle when I sip in between talking and playing the piano. I also can’t imagine that chugging down my meal would make my tummy feel too good, so the goal is to go slow and I should end up with a steady stream of food all day. That doesn’t sound too scary at all.
In case you’re still uncomfortable with this idea, let me break down how much food is in each bottle of this juice.
Glow: 2 apples, 6 celery stalks, 1/2 a cucumber, a handful of spinach, 3 collard leaves, 3 kale leaves, and a sprig of mint.
Fuel: 9 carrots, 1 orange, 1 apple, slice of pineapple, 1/2 a lemon, and an inch of turmeric.
Purify: 7 carrots, 1 apple, 2 celery stalks, a 1/4 of a cucumber, 1/2 a beet, and 1/2 a lemon
Fiji: 2 apples, 6 celery stalks, 1/2 a cucumber, a handful of spinach, 3 collard greens, 3 kale leaves, a squeeze of lemon and a hint of ginger
Green Supreme: 5 apples, 1 bunch of kale, and 1/2 a lemon
Vanilla Cloud: 1/2 a coconut’s meat, a spoonful of honey, 12 almonds, a pinch of cinnamon, a pinch of vanilla and a pinch of nutmeg
That’s in each and every bottle! No wonder it comes with such a price tag. Imagine for a second all of that food laid out in front of you. That’s a TON of fruits and veggies…More produce than I could imagine eating over a couple of days, and that’s what is in my daily intake o calories and nutrition during the cleanse. Fear not, my body will not think it’s starving. I actually wish I could afford to have that type of produce available to me on a daily basis.
Because this is juice and not whole fruits and vegetables, each bottle counts toward my daily Points Plus values as well, which is even further emphasis that I won’t be starving myself. It’s not like my juices will count as 0 Points because they’re all produce. On the contrary, I used their nutrition labels and discovered that the 6 juices will fill my day with 27 Points, which is actually a Point higher than my daily target.
Here’s how things will go starting tomorrow. When I wake up, I’m supposed to have hot water and lemon or apple cider vinegar (I’ve heard great things about ACV, so I might go on the hunt for some raw, heathy stuff rather than the distilled version currently sitting in my pantry) to sort of get the cleansing juices flowing. Then, once your body is “ready for more” I start with my Glow juice and go about my day. I’m supposed to consume the juices in the order the pamphlet says, so they’re all lined up in the fridge that way, ready to go. Now, here’s the big sigh of relief (more so for the rest of you than for me): If I get desperate to eat something, I can! They suggest raw fruits and veggies, broth based soups or a baked sweet potato. Honestly, I don’t think I will need more food than I’m already being given, but it’s nice to know I have that cushion.
So you all can relax now :-p
I know many people do a create your own juice type cleanse or lifestyle, but I don’t have a juicer, I don’t have the money for all of the produce, and with my wedding less than 4 weeks away, I just don’t have the time. I am SO thankful to Suja for picking my video as one of the winners because this allows me to try the cleanse I’ve been wanting to try (it’s a $162 cleanse before paying for the shipping..), takes care of me having to worry about any sort of cooking for 3 days, and is hopefully going to make me feel like a healthy supercharged rockstar! All of the reviews I have read (and believe me, I did my research, focusing primarily on blogs similar to mine: real people, real life experiences) have been so positive and reassuring. It’s not about a quick fix for weightless! As I explained in my Weight Watchers Confessional, there is no quick fix for weightless! This cleanse is about refreshing, resetting and rejuvenating my system, getting some of my energy and positivity back and hopefully starting to feel like my old self again (which as been a big struggle with life and stress lately). I think that’s exactly what this stressed out bride needs.
So, come with me as I embark on this new experience. I’m also considering vlogging a bit about it as well, and if I do, I’ll be sure to share the videos.
My cleanse will start tomorrow morning, Monday December 9th, 2013.
