Song of the Week: Let it Go sung by Caleb Hyles

SongOftheWeek

In honor of the release of Frozen on DVD (which showed up at my door on its release date thanks to a surprise  from my awesome mother-in-law), here’s yet another version of the Oscar winning song “Let it Go” from the movie.  I know, I know, there are like a billion different covers of this song, but trust me, you need to see this.

I stumbled upon Caleb Hyles’ version of “Let it Go” thanks to one of my male students who emailed me this, praising the recording and setting it as a long term goal for himself.  Once I began listening I was immediately impressed with Caleb’s tone quality.  It’s rich and smooth and simply wonderful.  There are few things I love more than an amazing male singing voice.  Then, all of the sudden, a verse or so into the song he just leaps right up into the female range and starts singing in the same octave (and it’s in the original key, so the same notes) as Idina Menzel.  My jaw dropped.  I’m pretty sure my student was thoroughly amused by my reactions throughout the rest of the song.  Caleb successfully stays true to his rich, strong tone rather than switching up into thin falsetto as most men would.  He has a really neat combination of a classical richness, an occasional rock and roll rough growl (done it what sounds like the safest way) and tops it off with some of the brightest and purest belting vowels I’ve heard.  I was blown away.

There’s no iTunes link or anything this week.  Simply a YouTube video that I had to share with all of you.

Happy Spring, happy Friday, and happy Frozen release week!
