Choix Subscription Box Review

Choix Title

Subscription boxes are everywhere you look nowadays.  You might even be subscribed to one (or multiple) boxes.  I love them because it’s like getting little fun presents shipped right to me every month.  While the surprises are great, have you ever wished that you could choose the items that come to you in a subscription box? If so, Choix is the beauty subscription box for you.

The word Choix ((pronounced SHWAA) is French for “choice,” so the name is pretty genius.  Not only does it look pretty and sound fancy, but the name tells you a lot about the box in one word.  Choix is a beauty subscription box that sends you 5 samples of your choosing every month.  With products ranging from makeup for the entire face to skincare, it is an ideal box for the beauty enthusiast in your life who is a firm believer in “try before you buy.”

Choix carries a limited number of brand names, but the brand names are on the very high-end side, so I find that I am never at a loss for products I want to try.  Just a few names found on the Choix site are:

-NARS          -Benefit          -Bobbi Brown          -Kevyn Aucoin          -Lancome          -YSL       -Guerlain          -Cle de Peau          -Hourglass          -Clinique          -Smashbox

and more.  I know when I consider purchasing a brand with a price tag as high as some of those listed above, I want to try my best to be sure I love something before putting up the $$$ for it.  Choix not only lets you pick the product, but it also lets you pick the exact shade you want to sample.  The company then hand bottles or pans it for you and you can try exactly what you want and ultimately make a well educated decision about whether or not that particular product is for you.  Choix is the reason I fell in love with the NARS Audacious Lipsticks.  I’ve sampled at least 3 different shades since I’ve been a subscriber.

How It Works

Choix‘s website is a shop.  As you browse the shop you will notice each product has a “full size” and “sample” button.  If you’re a subscriber and it is your time to choose your samples (they’ll send you an email reminder), simply go to whatever product it is you want to try, click on the shade and make sure “sample” is highlighted and add it to your cart.  After you’ve added 5 items for your subscription box, check out like you normal (there will be a $0.00 balance due) and place your order.  It’s that simple.  You can also get samples for $5 each if you aren’t a subscriber, but if you’re going to buy multiple samples, you might as well just get the subscription.

Choix Elite

Like some subscription boxes out there, Choix comes with its own reward program.  Every month you get 250 Choix Elite points credited to your account, which equals $5 good toward a full size product purchase from the Choix shop. You can save up and spend up to 1000 Points toward a full size purchase, but there are minimum dollar values required to redeem.

250 Points = $5 off $25 purchase

500 Points = $10 off $50 purchase

750 Points = $15 off $75 purchase

1000 Points = $20 off $100 purchase

Don’t worry, it’s still a 20% value no matter which way you slice it. There are also ways to spend points on deluxe minis and special items in the Choix shop. Personally, I always prefer to spend points on making my bill smaller.

*Note: if you choose to not be a subscriber and you purchase a sample for $5, you can use that $5 in the shop but ONLY on the purchase of that specific item and shade you sampled.  There is definitely a lot more freedom when you’re a subscriber*

Cost, etc

I’m sure by now you’re wondering how much the Choix Subscription costs.  Choix is $20/month billed monthly, or you can purchase an annual membership for $200, which will get you two months free.

As you can see in the photo, the samples seem a bit small, and I’m not going to lie: compared to the deluxe sample sizes you get in boxes like Birchbox, they seem incredibly small.  Choix’s goal is to give a “generous sample for approximately 1 ‘regular’ use.” To their credit, I have found that I am able to use my samples over two or 3 days of wear, rather than just one, which is plenty of time for me to decide whether or not I want to invest in the full size product. That’s the whole reason I got a subscription like this, therefore Choix is doing its job.

Does $20 seem a little steep for what seems like a small amount of product: sometimes, but if you think about what goes into the whole box (you choosing exactly what you want and then someone carefully and hygienically taking those products and packing them up for you), it doesn’t seem like so much after all.

One more thing to note: If you decide not to choose your samples one month, they will choose for you and you’ll get a box filled with 5 surprises.  This was the case for me in the box photographed in this post.

I have been a very pleased customer since subscribing to Choix 5 months ago, and I have been enjoying giving all of these new products of my choosing a try.  If you would like any more information, they have a very detailed FAQ page that should clear up any questions.
