Well…That Sucked… | Day 2 of 90

Well, for as amazing as things went on day 1 of my magical journey to the best shape of my life, day 2 went to the same level in the completely opposite direction. ūüėęūüėĖ

Allow me to elaborate with a bunch of excuses.

First, I had to get up early to take my husband to the bus for work so he wouldn’t have to bring his car since he was headed straight from the office to the airport. Usually, getting up at 5:20 am isn’t a problem and is close to my new normal wakeup time, however, since we got back from Thanksgiving vacation I’ve been trying to get my body to feel normal, and usually, that means more sleep. Well, I don’t know how it got to be so late, but it turns out I ended up getting 4 and a half hours of sleep. This girl needs at least 6.5 to even consider functioning. Awesome.

Then, to top it all off, the day I have been anxiously awaiting finally came and I got my period. ūü©ł(why yes, I did just use the blood drop emoji). My natural cycle always, without fail, comes a day or two after my app actually says it will. Well, this month was an extra special month and while PMS and all of its glorious symptoms came right on schedule, the event that comes to relieve me of said symptoms came especially late and hit me like a brick wall.

I was beyond exhausted. A trip to Target and to my PO box took literally all of the energy I had in me. I managed to get to my step goal by discovering a new season of Younger on Hulu and told myself I could watch it only if I was stepping. I ended up binge-watching the entire season!! Yes, I got to my 14.5k steps, by I also sat on my butt a lot. I didn’t vlog, I didn’t write up this blog post, heck I didn’t even go upstairs more than twice the entire day because my legs were so tired. UGH!

Why I’m Finally Setting (and Sticking To) Boundaries

I’m truly finding it difficult to find the right words for this post. I’m in a pickle that involves my personal boundaries that I’ve set for myself and the guilt I’m feeling for standing my ground. In the past, I wouldn’t necessarily have had the guts to stand my ground this firmly, especially after several people close to me try to list reason after reason why I should break my boundary and why I am a huge disappointment to them for saying “no.”

Ah, saying no. Something we women are known for having a very difficult time doing.  If saying no is something we were good at there wouldn’t be over a million search results that pop up when searching “how to say no.” Clearly, it’s something we are bad at, and I’m tired of being one of those people who can easily get guilted into doing something I honestly don’t want to do.  It’s easier for me to say no to some people, but it’s incredibly difficult for me to do, especially without getting significant backlash, when it comes to family.

Having been a people pleaser my entire life, the last thing I want to hear is “I’m disappointed in you” or to have someone mad at me, so to prevent that from happening I would keep my mouth shut about how much I don’t want to do something and give of my time and/or resources anyway. More often than not this results in developing some negative feelings towards that person or thing, and the more I time I’m spending on this Earth the less tolerance I’m developing for feeling those negative emotions. I’m truly over harboring resentment and bitterness, and I want to approach every area of my life with joy and peace. Even if it’s something I don’t want to do, I can still do it joyfully. However, I feel like the lines in life are starting to blur together and what I value and prioritize is not getting respected by others, and this is an unacceptable thing.

Recently I’ve started setting boundaries and let me tell you, it has ruffled some feathers. As I’ve gotten older, gotten married, and started a life that is separate from the home I grew up in, I’ve learned a lot about myself, the kind of goals I want to have set for my life, the desires my husband and I have for our life together, and the priorities I need to have set to be my best and happiest self. Learning these things and setting these goals came with a list of commitments and boundaries, and I’m finding that many of the things on this list people on the outside don’t really understand.

As humans are all a little (or a lot) misunderstood. I don’t claim to fully know or understand anyone’s story or anyone’s truth other than my own. All I can give you is a little more information about me so you know exactly where I’m coming from and what my truths are. This is me (and now you’re singing that song from The Greatest Showman. You’re welcome!), and this is a little more of my thoughts about the parts of my life that are often misunderstood, even by those close to me.  Read more

You CAN Eat Peanut Butter and Lose Weight! | Healthy Eating All The Time and Go Bars

Peanut butter is something that I have loved all my life, but let’s be honest when you’re on a diet and trying to lose weight peanut butter is basically one of the first things to go. At least this is the case for me. I honestly don’t remember the last time I had a good old fashion peanut butter and jelly sandwich or didn’t eat peanut butter without mourning how many Weight Watchers points and calories the small 2 tbsp serving ended up being. I pretty much resigned myself to a life without peanut butter unless it was powdered PB (While it gets the job done, it in no way compares to the real deal). Sad day.

You guys all know I love my bars. Quest Bars, No Cow Bars, Dive Bars, and everything in between. Especially when I’m pressed for time, there is something wonderful about having my nutrients all packed into one little portable bar. As per usual, when I discover new brands of bars, I have to give them a try. I’ve seen this brand on Instagram for quite some time now, with many Weight Watchers and healthy lifestyle accounts posting photo after photo, raving about this delicious bar. I finally decided I had to give them a try.

I ended up with the complete Healthy Eating All The Time and Go (which I will from this point forward call HEAT bars for the sake of length) collection, both purchased by me and sent to me by the owner of the company.  Once I sat down and calculated the Points for all of the bars, which ranged from 6-8sp and 4-6pp, I opened up the one that seemed to be the most popular (cranberry peanut butter granola) and took a bite.

..and then I died and went to a peanut butter filled Heaven.

I’m not even joking. This bar, which is only 4 PP (I’m currently following the old WW plan), was a delicious mouthful of REAL peanut butter flavor. It was the most delicious bar I had ever bitten into, and I’m not exaggerating.

Wholesome, REAL Ingredients

Let’s talk about the ingredients for just a second. In a world of processed food that contains ingredients that sound anything but natural, the ingredients in HEAT bars are plain and simple: things like oats, natural peanut butter, sunflower seeds, coconut flakes, almonds, honey, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried apple, and the occasional 60% cacao chip or whey protein. Clean, whole ingredients that are easy to read and more importantly, are easy on the body. In a world of sugar alcohols and artificial everything, this was a very welcome change.  Read more

Chomps Snack Sticks

chompsMeet Chomps

For people that enjoy their Slim Jims or meaty snack stick type treats, I’ve found a new brand that might spark your interest. ¬†Chomps Snack Sticks are the healthier version of the snack you already know and love. ¬†Chomps are¬†made with 100% Non-GMO Grass-Fed Angus Beef,¬†contain no artificial ingredients (no nitrites, nitrates, MSG, colors, flavors) and are shelf stable for a year with the help of celery juice. Yeah, you read that right: celery juice.

Chomps come in 3 flavors: Original, Hoppin’ Jalapeno, and Crankin’ Cran. ¬†Personally, my favorite was the original flavor, as it’s the one without any spicy kick to it. ¬†I tried the cranberry one thinking it would be safe, but I failed to notice the habanero pepper on the label. ¬†Needless to say, I understand where the “crankin’ ” part of that particular flavor’s name came from. ¬†I gave all of the spicy ones to my dad, who loves food that sets his mouth on fire, and his feedback was quite positive. ¬†They taste delicious (and I agree, at least in terms of the original flavor), and are actually good for you too.

Snack time done right

Now lets take a look at Chomps from a nutritional perspective:

Original flavor (1 stick): Calories: 100  Fat: 6g  Saturated Fat: 3g  Carbs: 0g  Fiber: 0g  Sugar: 0g  Protein: 9g.  Weight Watchers SmartPoints Value: 3

Bulu Box is a monthly subscription service that offers samples of health and wellness products delivered to your door every month. ¬†You can subscribe to 3, 6, or 12 month plans or on a month to month basis for $10 a month. ¬†They offer two types of boxes: A general health and wellness box or a weight loss box. ¬†My subscription shows the content of the weight loss box. ¬†Let’s see what July has in store for me.

July Bulu 1

IPS All Natural Egg White Chips

These are chips that are all natural and made out of egg whites (who knew?!) which means they pack a powerful punch of protein (7 g per serving). ¬†I sampled the salt and black pepper flavor, and while I would have rather tried any other flavor option, these were surprisingly yummy (I don’t like pepper). ¬†I am huge on protein content, so the fact that they carry a¬†significant serving protein makes me feel totally not guilty ¬†having chips with my lunch. ¬†The bag was 3 Points Plus and definitely worth it. ¬†I will be looking into other flavors of these for sure. ¬†The only downside is the price tag.

Rutaesomn

This is a sleep aid containing the active ingredient Rutaecarpine, which is found in the Rvodia fruit. ¬†This ingredient actually helps remove caffeine (which tends to linger long after consumption) from the body in order to help you sleep better. ¬†Take this 2-4 hours before sleep and it will help rid the body of anything left over from your latte earlier to make falling asleep easier and the quality of your sleep better. ¬†I’m intrigued.

This herbal tea is caffeine free, rich in antioxidants, and made from Egyptian mint leaves. ¬†Mint is known for soothing upset stomachs and headaches. ¬†Personally I think mint tea is very relaxing and a great thing to have while you’re curled up on the couch at night. ¬†I actually drank this Monday night and it was a very soothing way to end the day.

Dear Bulu Box- this product has NOTHING to do with weight loss… I know it’s a lifestyle bonus, but still..

Anyway, this soap has a nice citrus scent, is all natural, and contains shea butter, aloe, and jojoba oil to keep hands soft. ¬†The nice thing about this brand is for every purchase of Soap Box Soaps, the company donates soap, fresh water, or vitamins to a child in need. ¬†Let’s hear it for companies that do good for others!

Smarty Pants Adult Multivitamins

I not only received 3 packets of this in my Bulu Box (2 were kids versions…), but I also got these in this month’s Birchbox. ¬†Apparently gummy vitamins for adults are popular right now. ¬†Smarty Pants delivers your entire day’s worth of vitamins in a tasty treat form. ¬†6 gummies equals a serving which is equivalent to popping a multi vitamin. ¬†The kids formula serving is only 4 gummies. ¬†If there wasn’t such ¬†price tag on this product I would be all over it. ¬†However, until I can get these for a price comparable to my One-A-Day bottle, I think I’ll pass.

There was a mini version of this bar for us to try in this month’s box. ¬†I have tried the full size bar before, and I will admit, they are quite delicious. ¬†They most definitely will satisfy a sweet craving while packing a punch of 13 g of protein. ¬†Power Crunch bars come is 7 flavors:¬†Triple Chocolate, Peanut Butter Cr√®me, Peanut Butter Fudge, French Vanilla Cr√®me, Wild Berry Cr√®me, Cookies & Cr√®me, or Chocolate Mint. ¬†I got to sample the vanilla in my Bulu Box and have tried cookies and cream and chocolate as full size bars. ¬†All were delightfully satisfying.

This protein supplement is an alternative to those who don’ t like animal protein or who have struggles digesting whey. ¬†Mix this powder into your beverage or get more creative by adding it to oatmeal or even baking products (one of these days I’ll have to try that!). The powder is unflavored, so in theory it should blend well with anything. ¬†There are 20 g protein in every 30g serving.

Rainbow Light PMS Relief

This herbal supplement contains a botanical blend that claims it will balance the mood, promote good digestion, help relax muscles and help regulate the menstrual cycle. ¬†Ingredients like California poppy and lavender ease the mood while L-Theanine helps reduce the occasional aches and pain associated with PMS. ¬†This product is gluten free and vegan. ¬†The recommended dosage is 2 tablets once or twice daily with meals. ¬†My assumption is you take it when PMS starts and straight through the duration of your period. ¬†The sample was only one dose, so I took it during that time of month, which was conveniently right after I got the box, and while the idea is a good one, I couldn’t notice anything specific that had improved. My problem with this is I feel it has no business being in a box geared specifically toward weight loss. ¬†I have seen this trend recently in my boxes and it has been leaving me disappointed.

Skinny Girl On-the-Go Bar

Skinny Girl is a brand that cleverly created low-cal alcoholic beverage options has busted into the on-the-go snack industry. ¬†These snack bars are only 150-170 calories (4 Points Plus) and have a generous amour of fiber and protein in each one. ¬†While the bar itself was quite tasty, I’m not sure it’s any more special than any other bar of the same quality. ¬†There are two flavors available at the Bulu Box shop: Banana Oatmeal Dark Chocolate and Dark Chocolate Multi-Grain Pretzel (the one I sampled) but on the Skinny Girl site there is a third option of Chocolate Peanut Butter with Sea Salt, which quite honestly seems the most appealing to me. ¬†You can find these bars at many health stores like GNC and Vitamin Shoppe, but apparently they’re also at Target. ¬†If the flavors sound appealing to you, picking up a single bar would probably be worth a try.

Loud Truck Energy Gummi Bears

It seems to be that everything can be found in gummy form lately, and caffeine filled dietary supplements are no exception. The goal of these bears are to be a quick and spill free way to deliver the caffeine content of a pick me up cup of joe as well as some vitamins thrown in for good measure. ¬†I will say, they were pretty tasty, and while the caffeine hit isn’t huge (32g), it’s still a little something to take the edge off of an energy drop. ¬†These energizing gummies are available in citrus and berry flavors and can be purchased in boxes of 12 packets.

Nuvia Cafe

Instant coffee with other health benefits is what a cup of Nuvia Cafe offers. ¬†This cup of coffee contains things like mango and pomegranate extract for vitamins and immune health. ¬†Green tea also boosts energy and gives a healthy dose of antioxidants. ¬†In theory, a great idea, however…when you’re a girl who loves her quality cup of coffee, this is not what you want to turn to. ¬†I simply was not impressed with this taste at all. ¬†I’ll take my regular coffee over this any day and will find my nutritional benefits elsewhere. ¬†Bummer.

WhiteShield

This is a powder that you mix in to your coffee to prevent coffee stains. ¬†Apparently, with continued use it will also help remove your previous stains. ¬†They also claim that the powder does not alter the taste, smell or consistency of your drink. ¬†I did try this twice and I found that last statement to be true, so that’s good.

Again, this is a product that in no way has anything to do with a weight loss themed box. ¬†While it’s a great idea, I’m getting frustrated with the fact that I specifically wanted weight loss products and I get things like coffee stain prevention. ¬†Maybe it’s just me, but I find that irritating.

SHREDZ Fat Burner

While I do not recommend regular use of thermogenics, as some of them can really screw with your system, I do enjoy the occasional boost from a dose or two.  I find that some thermogenics give me a mighty awesome every boost accompanied by a decreased appetite, which is one kind of product I would expect to see in my Bulu Box.  Here is what the Bulu Box website says about the SHREDZ fat burner:

This gluten-free thermogenic harnesses the power of naturally found ingredients to burn fat and deliver clean energy and improved mental focus for an intense workout experience with obvious results. Vitamin B5, Green Tea Extract and Cayenne Pepper Extract help raise the body’s internal temperature to burn fat at a constant, sustained rate. A combination of other natural ingredients work to speed metabolism, enhance your mood, reduce water bloating, stabilize blood sugar and provide a boost of energy. Shredz Fat Burner helps you get the body you want faster than diet and exercise alone.*
