I love things that feel pretty, fancy, and a bit glam. As someone who works from home (therefore spending most of my time there), it’s important to me that my living space feels beautiful and luxurious. This is easier said than done for two reasons. 1) I’m on a budget which means high priced items to make my home prettier aren’t always the priority when it comes to spending money, and 2) I live with my husband, who doesn’t care about “pretty” nearly as much as I do. Neat, tidy, and clean, sure, but by no means is my husband a man that cares if the living space feels luxe and beautiful. Let’s be real: the only reason we have upgraded some of our furniture from the old busted leather couches is got as hand me downs after college is because of me and my desire to live like a married couple with a nice home rather than the hand me down bachelor pad my husband had not so carefully fully curated by the time I met him.
While buying new furniture or appliances always feels glamorous and makes home feel a bit fancier (at least that’s how I felt when we said goodbye to those beaten up leather couches and replaced them with what you see in the photos), it’s definitely not budget friendly to make such a purchase every time you want to feel like you’ve had an upgrade. The truth is you don’t need to spend a fortune or buy something large to up the luxe feel of your living space. In fact, I firmly believe that it’s the little details, the small afterthoughts are the things can make a huge impact on your space. I have a few tiny details you can add (or upgrade) to your space to help you feel a little more luxe, even if you’re just curled up on the couch watching some tv.
Coffee mugs that make you smile: I don’t know about you, but every morning one of the first things I do is wander out to the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee (which my coffee maker has already made because I set it up the night before). I own what my husband calls an “absurd” amount of coffee mugs, but what he doesn’t understand is opening that cabinet and getting to choose from my extensive collection brings a simple joy to my morning. I see Rae Dunn mugs that say “coffee,” “harmony,”and “faith,” a Starbucks mug that says “Best Day Ever,” my stunning multi-colored collection of stoneware mugs from this little restaurant on Sanibel Island (which you have to buy in store), and a beautiful mug with gold heart detailing that is probably my most glam coffee mug and a treasured Christmas gift from Erik’s grandmother, among several others. (sidenote: I’m realizing I have legit sentimental stories for most of my prized mugs, which could be a blog post in and of itself. I don’t know if that is awesome or sad.) I’m that person that will pick the “faith” mug on a day I feel I need a little more, or the golden sparkling mug when I want to feel prettier, or the “coffee” mug when I want to encourage my morning cuppa to boost me a little more than normal. Bottom line, my coffee mug collection makes my heart happy and plays a part in the aesthetic of my morning surroundings.
Some nice coffee or tea to put in your glamorous mugs: You could consider this a bonus item, but I know filling my cup up with a special coffee or tea instead of my everyday Dunkin Donuts coffee makes me feel a little more luxurious. Typically, if I want a luxe cup of coffee I opt for something with a bit more of a kick like Death Wish Coffee. If special tea is what I’m going for, I often find comfort and joy in one of the many fun flavors at my favorite tea boutique, David’s Tea. While these are little indulgences I don’t enjoy every single day, on the days I do, I truly feel like I’m treating myself to something special and I automatically feel fancier, even if my special cuppa something is just sitting by my computer as I type away.
Scented candles: I am a huge home fragrance lover. Essential oils, wall plug-ins, and candles are in no short supply in my home. I find that the easiest way to elevate the atmosphere of a room is to add a nice scent to it. Bonus points if it’s in a pretty container. While there are candles on the market that require you to pay a pretty penny to take them home, I find that I get just as much pleasure out candles that are on the lower end of the price spectrum. My personal favorites are the 3 wick candles from Bath and Body Works, which I only buy if they’re on sale for $12.50. They’ve definitely upped their game when it comes to packaging, and now a Bath and Body Works candle can be even more glamorous looking than some candles on the high-end price spectrum. I often buy scents seasonally, so now that we’re gearing up for spring I’m incorporating fresh and mildly fruity scents into my home. In the photos is a Bath and Body Works called Pink Prosecco which smells of apple, pear, and prosecco.
A cozy, beautiful throw blanket: To me, there is nothing more luxurious to have in your living room than an amazing throw blanket. I mean, just touching something soft is a proven way to reduce stress, so why not curl up on the couch covered in softness? There are at least 3 blankets out and available at any given moment in my living room. We recently added a Minky Couture blanket to the mix, and I am in love. I actually heard of Minky Couture from my mother in law, who has several of their luxurious blankets at her place in Florida. When we were down for Thanksgiving this past year, it was quite cold for Florida weather. Being the wimp that I am (which is totally uncalled for being from Chicago), I used their large Minky Couture blanket the entire time I was there. I’d turn on the fireplace (yes, in Florida. I know I’m ridiculous.) and curl up underneath one and take that same blanket to bed with me as an extra layer at night. There’s just something so comforting about a super soft blanket, and it definitely feels like a luxury.
Minky Couture has a ton of super cute designs and sizes for all ages. My blanket is from their Ultra Plush collection in the color mulberry, and it looks so chic against my plain couches. The softness is simply divine. It’s a heavier blanket which makes me feel all cozy. Thankfully it’s machine washable because Gracie loves it just as much as I do. Our morning routine regularly consists of curling up together on the recliner with the Minky Couture blanket while I enjoy my coffee. It’s the perfect addition to your home and an amazing thing to gift to brides, moms, and new homeowners.
The lovely people at Minky Couture actually gave me a discount code for Diva and the Divine readers just in time for Mother’s Day. Trust me, these will make mom feel comfortable and fancy all year round.

Flowers: There’s nothing that makes me feel fancier than a bouquet of flowers. Fresh flowers are always best, but even a bouquet of fake flowers from your craft store can breathe life into any room. I love picking up fresh flowers for myself (although I don’t do it often) and when I do it’s typically from a grocery store rather than a flower shop. Have you seen the pretty bouquets you can get at Trader Joe’s for only $10? They’re stunning! I also have a fake bouquet that I hand-picked and arranged that sits in a decorative vase (it came with my living room furniture) that can’t actually hold water (dumb..). Rather than leaving the vase empty, I put it to good use, and now I have flowers that I don’t need to water, trim, or throw away. Whether you choose fresh or fake (or both), flowers instantly add beauty and luxury to any room.
The Right Lighting: Lighting can make or break a room. Full transparency, my lighting setup in my living room is totally “extra” and completely unnecessary, but I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you it makes my living room feel completely luxurious and glam, and I’m totally obsessed. I have 4 Phillips Hue Color lightbulbs in my living room. We originally got them because of their ability to change to different shades of white. Mister and I love having a pure/cool toned white light while we are trying to get things done, but at the end of the day, we wanted something that could switch to a warmer, more relaxing light to help my mind wind down. As someone with insomnia issues, this was important to me. The Hue light bulbs were a great compromise, as they do both. We upgraded to the colors because we could actually save a few dollars on the set, and I’m not going to lie, having colored lightbulbs is a lot of fun. It definitely lets us set the mood for whatever we are doing. I may have set up the lights to match the Florida Panthers hockey team (Erik’s team) so we can have fun lights whenever we watch hockey. Do you need these bulbs? Not at all. Are they a lot of fun? 100% yes!
Those are 6 ways I make my space feel more luxurious. It’s so important that I feel like I’m living in a pretty, cozy space, and these little changes are ways I do it. Do you have anything to add to this list? Let me know!
